We will all meet at 7:15 am at the Big Buffalo Creek CA campsite before splitting into MDC staff-led groups depending on the public’s hiking preference. One group will stay and bird at the campsite area. The second group will bird a short hiking trail to the creek. The third group will hike a medium-length, steep trail that passes through the Natural Area. Depending on time and how active the birds are, we will bird to anywhere from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. When we are done birding, we will meet back at the campsite for a quick discussion on the birds that we observed. The goal is to document every bird we see or hear, but we are particularly interested in warbler species. Last year our team recorded 22 warbler species in one day throughout the Big Buffalo Creek Watershed Priority Geography. Warblers are neotropical migratory birds; in the spring some species fly thousands of miles from their over-wintering grounds in Central and South America to their breeding grounds in Northern US and Canada. The birds will be recorded on e-birds, a citizen science project documenting birds across the world. Interested participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and bird identification books as well as water, snacks, hats, bug spray, and sunscreen. MARK R MILLER
